A landmark 2025 study in Jama Network Open exposed a hidden risk that most health systems are not talking about: many AI systems scoring high on medical benchmarks are succeeding through pattern recognition, not genuine clinical understanding. AI patient safety depends on what happens between the model’s output and the clinician’s decision, and almost no one in the industry is asking that question.
That gap has a name. It is called clinical validation. And for most AI vendors in healthcare, it does not exist.
