Lyons Community Living Center adopts GetWell Resident Experience to engage senior residents and boost Veteran satisfaction
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Dec. 20, 2018 — Patients at the Veterans Affairs Community Living Center in Lyons, NJ are embracing digital health technology to take an active role in managing their health and wellness. The VA nursing home is the first in the nation to adopt the GetWell Resident Experience—a cloud-based patient engagement solution developed specifically for Veterans in long-term care settings. Created by GetWellNetwork, it offers a simple and easy-to-use interactive suite of tools and resources for navigating the Veteran health journey.

VA nursing homes, referred to as community living centers (CLCs), often serve residents with more numerous and challenging medical conditions than do private sector facilities.
“CLC residents are older and may be profoundly disabled. They often feel isolated by their circumstances,” said Kriste J. Grau, RN, MSN, MBA, GetWellNetwork chief nursing officer and VP government client services.
A Veteran herself who served as a Navy nurse for 30 years, Grau says seeing the impact the technology is having in promoting active daily living amongst residents is incredibly rewarding. “It opens the world to them and really improves their quality of life,” said Grau.
A Veteran-Centered Experience
The solution includes thoughtfully designed features that take into consideration the specific needs of aging residents, such as larger type size and icons, simple navigation and menus, personalized safety education, leisure activity coordination and end-of-life care information.
Additional highlights include:
- Patient orientation memory aids and cognitive games to help enhance quality of life and keep minds sharp and alert.
- Prescribable workflows educate, inform and inspire Veterans while reinforcing routines.
- Auto-triggered invites and reminders encourage social engagement.
- Veterans can even personalize the interface for a one-of-a-kind experience that reflects their specific military designation and service story.
Earlier this week, GetWellNetwork leadership and the government client services team visited the 251-bed facility to get first-hand feedback on the solution direct from early-adopter Veterans like CLC resident Heather-Dawn Rau.
“I like that I get movies and I like to know what’s happening every day,” Rau said. “It’s improved my stay.”
She also offered suggestions for usability and functionality enhancements. The GetWellNetwork team showed Rau and others how to access health education resources, such as videos on fall prevention, infection prevention and oral care.
”We are thrilled to be here to celebrate VA New Jersey Health’s continued commitment to Veteran satisfaction and the innovative work they’re doing to advance the quality of care throughout the system,” said Michael O’Neil, GetWellNetwork founder and CEO.
