GetWellNetwork Recognizes National Health Systems, Hospitals and Individuals for Excellence in Interactive Patient Care

Community leaders honored during ninth annual user conference, GetConnected, in Philadelphia

Bethesda, Md., May 26, 2016 – GetWellNetwork®, Inc., the leader in Interactive Patient Care™ (IPC) solutions, announced the recipients of this year’s IPC Awards recognizing health care leaders and organizations from the IPC community that have demonstrated exceptional patient care and health and performance outcomes. The award ceremony took place during GetConnected 2016, the company’s ninth annual user conference, in Philadelphia on May 25.

“Our client community continues to transform care delivery and the patient experience through innovative uses of IPC,” said Michael O’Neil, founder and chief executive officer of GetWellNetwork. “This year we had more than 90 award nominations representing the best of the best among America’s leading health care organizations. Whether they are caring for our youngest patients and their families or our Veteran community, these providers are redefining patient care and clinical practice.”

A committee of health care leaders and executives reviewed the submissions to select finalists and winners. This year’s recipients include:

Overall Achievement

BayCare, a leading not-for-profit health care system serving Tampa Bay and central Florida, received the Overall Achievement award. This award recognizes exceptional performance improvement in service, quality and operations through the use of IPC and GetWellNetwork’s Blueprint for Success methodology.

IPC Champion

The IPC Champion is a leader whose vision and commitment to patient-centered care transforms clinical and operational performance and the patient experience throughout their organization. This year’s IPC Champion is Nina Jeffords, RN, MSHA, chief operating officer/chief nurse officer at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast in Miramar Beach, Fla.

IPC Emerging Leader

St. Elizabeth Healthcare started using IPC in 2015, and was selected as the IPC Emerging Leader for their strategic and operational leadership, focus on improved outcomes and a standardized level of care throughout their entire health system.


The Innovation award recognizes a facility that advances the impact of IPC through creative strategies, care processes and technology. A leader in the IPC community, Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, Calif., won the Innovation award.

Leadership Engagement

This award recognizes a facility whose leadership team demonstrated organizational adoption of IPC as a care delivery method and core strategy for performance improvement. The winning organization was Carolinas HealthCare System.

Clinician and Staff Empowerment

Two hospitals were recognized for their clinician and staff empowerment by using IPC in every aspect of the care process, from patient education and satisfaction to new user orientation. The Clinician and Staff Empowerment award went to Florida Hospital East Orlando and Florida Hospital Celebration Health.

Care Process Integration

The Care Process Integration award is given to an organization that uses IPC technology to address core patient care and clinical needs, and has completed key interfaces with HIT systems. Martinsburg VA Medical Center utilized the Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt technique to help integrate IPC into their electronic medical records patient admission process.

World-class Service and Support

This award recognizes a facility that collaborates across all departments to manage IPC utilization, monitor patient satisfaction and exceed goals for service excellence. The winner of the World-class Service and Support award was Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center in Baldwin Park, Calif.

Patient Satisfaction

GetWellNetwork received 17 nominations recognizing hospitals or health systems for patient satisfaction efforts. Two facilities tied for the award: Great Plains Health in North Platte, Neb. and St. Vincent Fishers Hospital in Fishers, Ind.

Quality and Safety

This award recognizes organizations that use IPC to achieve extraordinary results in quality compliance measures, and activate patients to better manage their condition and stay safe. Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, R.I., added site-specific education through IPC to help families learn about their “Drive to Zero Harm” initiative. And Christiana Care in Delaware implemented a pilot study to improve communication around pain management, falls, handwashing, seven-day re-admissions and more.

Finance and Operations

Nominees for this award have documented improved outcomes in operational and cost efficiency through performance improvement, and generated additional revenue through the use of IPC. The winner of the Finance and Operations award was Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Outstanding Poster Presentations

As sponsors of the IPC Awards event, LG Electronics presented two awards for interactive posters. The GetWellNetwork executive team selected Tampa General Hospital for Outstanding Poster Presentation. And the Attendees’ Choice Poster Presentation award, voted on by conference attendees, went to the Fargo VA Health Care System.

Marbella Accelerator

This award was created to recognize sustained utilization of the Marbella patient rounding and surveying tool to improve staff and patient feedback and real-time service recovery. Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, Calif., was the inaugural winner of the Marbella Accelerator award.

GetWell Labs Next Gen

GetWell Labs is GetWellNetwork’s research and development initiative that brings together disruptive technologies to advance patient and family engagement. During an Innovation Showcase, GetWell Labs invited six start-up companies to compete for this award as voted on by conference attendees. Using innovative 3-D technology to turn paper books into interactive experiences for pediatric patients, the GetWell Labs Next Gen award winner was Spellbound™ from ALTality.


The Research award recognizes five national clinical sites who worked with the research team from the O’Neil Center to validate the Center’s Person Engagement Index. This index will be used to transform how care is delivered based on an assessment of person’s capacity to engage in their care. To recognize their participation, the winners of the Research Award were: Carolinas Medical Center and Carolinas HealthCare System University in Charlotte, N.C., Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, Calif., Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center in Baldwin Park, Calif., and Florida Hospital Celebration Health in Celebration, Fla.
